bill-checker from Bill Alert

About

Bill Alert is a news channel about American household energy bills: rate hikes, heating fuel prices, data-center fights, and what each one does to the bill.

The one sentence the whole thing runs on

"I read the rate filing so you don't have to."

That is the entire claim. Not a credential and not a career in the industry — the actual filing, the actual commission order, the actual statute, read and reported in plain English to the people who pay the bill.

What that means for this app

bill-checker is built so that a figure of ours cannot appear on screen unless a document is attached to it. That is enforced in the code, not remembered by a person: a figure with no source simply throws an error instead of rendering. Where the research is not done, the app says "Not checked yet" and nothing else.

It stores no prices, because prices change every week. You type in your own, from your own bill.

Whose side it is on

The side of the person paying the bill. That does not make utilities, regulators or developers villains: the app reports what their documents say, in their words, and nothing about what anyone intended.

What nobody here is

Not a utility, a regulator or an energy supplier. Not a financial adviser or an attorney. Nobody here sells electricity, gas, solar panels or a switching service, earns anything when you switch, or knows your situation.

Corrections

If you find an answer that is wrong, or a document that has been replaced, write and say so. The people who check are the reason the source buttons exist.
